Salt pans, hill towns, countryside, seaside cities and islands: western Sicily is an area more than a single place. Here you start from your guests, not from the postcard.

The feel of the territory

Western Sicily brings together coast and nature reserves, salt pans, hilltop towns, countryside, seaside cities and islands. It offers a lot of choice and little immediacy: two places in the same area can give opposite days to guests and suppliers, and a landscape tells you nothing about whether a space is available.

This page is for couples who do not have a starting point yet. You start from the group: how many guests, where they travel from, how much they are willing to move, what pace the day should have.

How to choose the area

Use the same criteria for every area and compare the answers, not the photographs. Scopello and the coast give sea and nature on an intimate scale, with limited access; Mazara del Vallo gives a living town with Kasbah, centre and seafront close together; the Trapani area gives hill towns, salt pans and islands, with very different landscapes and logistics. The three dedicated pages are alongside.

  • Guests: how many, where they travel from, who finds moving around difficult.
  • Landscape: sea, historic town, hilltop village or countryside.
  • Pace: a single stop or several moves within the same day.
  • Timing: even just the season, because it changes light, wind and crowds.

Which ceremony to imagine

Civil, religious or symbolic: a civil ceremony depends on the competent municipality, a religious one on the parish, and a symbolic one has no legal value and depends on whoever manages the space. For couples coming from abroad, ask the municipality and your own consulate early which documents are needed, because requirements are not the same for every country.

In this area you will see historic sites, churches and natural areas that look ideal. Always check with the manager and the competent authorities what is allowed for ceremonies, set-up and filming: a photo of a place is not a permit.

Seasons and light

We give no temperatures or crowd calendars: they vary every year. In general, summer brings sea, long light and midday heat; the shoulder seasons softer light and less certain weather; winter short days and wind. In an area this varied, the same week can bring very different days on the coast, in the hills or on the islands.

To choose the period, start from the day you want, not from the month: our guide «Quando sposarsi in Sicilia» (Italian) reasons exactly this way.

Getting there and moving around

The reference airports are Palermo and Trapani-Birgi: check which connections exist from your city for your dates. From there the area is wide and has to be crossed by road: moving between areas is a real journey, to be estimated with someone who knows the roads at the planned time.

Avoid putting several areas in the same weekend just because they look close on a tourist map. If guests are flying in, a door-to-door plan with pick-up points and one person for communications removes the most common problems.

What to ask before you choose

  • How long is the journey, at the planned time, between airport, accommodation and venue?
  • Who manages the space, and what conditions apply to ceremony, reception and photos?
  • What alternative plan exists, and when is it decided?
  • For couples from abroad: which documents are needed, and how far in advance?
  • Are permits needed for filming, drones or set-up?
  • Where do guests sleep, and how do they get around in the evening?
  • Which parts of the programme can be dropped without spoiling the day?
